Human waste
is ruining
india
70% of India's population
defecates in the open
space of India
The Problem:
The problem our organization is addressing is the fact that slums in New Dehli don’t have a proper way to manage their waste. Everyone is affected due to the lack of clean drinking water, but more specifically, the women are forced to defecate in hours that are unsafe to be out and the youth develop water-related diseases that kill one child every minute (water.org). According to The Huffington Post, “Less than ⅓ of the population in India has access to sanitation, this includes defecation areas.” This is due to a previously inefficient system of waste disposal that has polluted their water to a point where it is deadly to even the Indian people’s crops. There are physically not enough restrooms to fulfill the demand posed by New Delhi's 21.75 million people occupying their city. Because there is no waste management in New Delhi, people are left with no choice but to defecate close to the river or even in it. This puts the water in a state that is beyond purifiable.
